Business Maxims #1

On July 29, 2010, in online business, by Paul Evans

The next few issues of NPL will cover Business Maxims that have made my entire circle’s (friends, associates, colleagues) businesses successful. These truths and principles can be applied to all areas of life…

Business Maxim #1 : The better YOU become the better your business becomes.

Once again I opened my email this morning to a butt-load of “offers” (i.e. junk that doesn’t work but gullible people will buy).

Most of these have a common theme… magic. “Click this button and retire” type of con-artistry. Or “here’s something you cannot live without” – but strangely enough I didn’t buy and lo and behold I am still breathing!

All of these make me want to throw up because of the common thread of moron…

“It make no difference who YOU are, or your background, or your values. Just stir the cauldron and all of your wildest dreams will come true.”

What?

Well, you’ve got to admit that magic is attractive to a culture drinking from the cup of the Kardashians and FlavoFlav.

Gulp!

Our society raises us to be insecure and to believe in everyone and everything other than ourselves. So slick marketers know they have to take people out of the equation to make sure people buy.

Because if folks started to realize that THEY are an essential part of making money online, then all the slick marketer fast profits would be gone. These guys literally sit around laughing about this stuff. I’ve met them at seminars and events. And they make me sick.

However…

YOU are essential.

That’s the way it should be. AND it’s the best kind of business to operate.

People buy your product the first time. They buy YOU every time after that.

When people like you – you make more money.

When you are on the forefront others don’t just talk about your product they talk about you.

Which means…

Be the BEST YOU, you can be. And if there are areas that need to change for you to become better, then do it.

Years ago I was known for being ultra-sarcastic. I was just being funny (or so I thought), but it turns out that I hurt a lot of feelings. (Here’s a tip: hurt feelings do not buy from you.)

Instead of saying, “That’s just who I am, they can get over it.” I decided to change. I began serving sarcasm with the smile. My overall personality didn’t change, but I worked hard on using it in a way that builds people up rather than tearing them down.

(Unless we’re talking about flim-flam artists taking advantage of the good folks in my markets, then the gloves come off.)

I worked on becoming better (but I still have a loooooooong way to go).

Since making that unsimple change profits have increased. It taught me the valuable lesson that you cannot separate yourself from your business.

My friends have noticed that same results in their businesses as well. When they began focusing on stretching themselves. Working hard. Going for the maximum instead of the minimum. Ignoring mediocrity. Well, what do you know? They started making more and more and impacting more and more people.

Weird how that works, right?

How do you become better?

Every day you need to listen, watch and or read what will make you a better person. Stuff that will help you serve your market better. Like this…

Nicheology members, to help you grow in life and business, I added two categories to the site… Success and Paul’s Points.

Success = resources and good nutrition for your mind.

Paul’s Points = quick hits on things I am working on, thinking about, cool marketing stunts and more… (I’ll be adding about one of these a week.)

Because who YOU are as a human being massively impacts your business. I don’t care what those slick marketers want us to believe.

In the second business maximum we’ll look at “Not Caring What Others Think.”

In #3 we’ll hit “The Power of Perseverance and Other Illusive Creatures.”

Success is NOT an Accident,
Paul
