Days Like This

On December 15, 2011, in coaching, by Paul Evans

Here’s an important lesson if…

You get overwhelmed with online business or you get frustrated because it doesn’t seem to be happening fast enough or you feel like giving up.

Yesterday, I ran my fastest five miles ever. (MY fastest, not THE fastest.)

I did my first 5 miles on Sept 9 of this year in 54:15

Yesterday’s was 43:43. More than 10 minutes difference.

Today, I got up and did NOT, DID NOT want to run. I wanted to go get a fried steak biscuit from Hardee’s and some hashrounds. (No, I don’t care if that doesn’t sound good to you! :)

Instead………. I put on my stupid running shoes. Slapped my iPhone to my arm and started out. I hated it so much I even stopped listening to audio. I felt like I was stumbling along. Semi-praying that a car would swipe me and put me out of my misery.

Finally, I made it back to the house… 46:52.

Just 3 minutes off my best time. And 7 something better than my worst time.

Here are the lessons…

#1 Commitment

Dang, I did not want to go run today. And you’d think that I’m glad I went. We’ll I’m still not thrill about it. Not sitting here patting myself on the back for remaining true. I’m tired! :)

If you’re going to serve a market and make money. Stay committed. Some days will be your fastest times and some days will stink. Some days you will love it and some days you will hate it. It’s just the way it is.

#2 Consistency.

Yesterday was my fastest because I began running in July (total for that month = 9 miles). But I didn’t quit even tho every step felt like molasses.

Day after day you have to keep going. Go for the cumulative effect not just the current experience.

#3 Change.

Unless I get injured or quit, I’ll never be as slow as I once was. There’s no going back.

Heck, today I felt AWEFUL and couldn’t do my once worse!

Once you start going forward there’s no going back. The first time is ALWAYS the hardest. Then it gets easier. Then you have a ROUGH day, but still can’t go back to not knowing how to upload, or post on WordPress or… you get the idea.

The Shirelles put it this way, “Mama said there’d be days like this.”

Mama and Shirelles were right. But who cares, even our bad performance today can’t compare to our very first move. We’ve been change for the better.

Keep running after your goal!!!

Profitable Content Creation

On November 28, 2011, in internet marketing, by Paul Evans

Profitable Content Creation – Content Is Cash and How to Get Your Fair Share (About Time, Right?)

Content is the basis of EVERYTHING online. Creating your content and then marketing it well is how you profit from your content online.

Create It – The key to successful content creation is to be prolific. What most people do is wind up staring at a blank screen. I don’t want you to do what most people do because most people are broke.

Instead of staring at a blank screen I want you to use templates. Create a 7 tips article or a 3 mistakes article. Then all you have to do is fill in the blanks with your information.

Another way to become prolific is to write on regular basis. Make it a habit, and you’ll find yourself the flow. Set a specific time each day to write. And most importantly, write even if you don’t feel like it. Make it part of your daily ritual.

Market it – So many people create their content and then do nothing with it. Again, don’t be most people.

There are so many ways to market your content that you really can’t run out of ideas. Start with your blog. Then post your article on EzineArticles and other top Article Directories. Next is Social Media. Use your article content or parts of your content on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn. You can also turn your content into teleseminars and webinars.

Convert it into products & services and sell it – What most people do not realize is that while you are creating your content you are also creating your information products.

For example, a simple 7 tips article expanded on could become a great eBook. In a similar way, a collection of several articles on a specific topic gathered into one document becomes an ebook or mini-guide.

A few years ago I took the articles on this blog and turned it into an ebook. I sold several thousand dollars worth to readers. Seth Godin does the same thing. Many of his New York Times Bestselling books are simply the compilation of his blog.

A couple of weeks ago I was discussing all of this with Jeff Herring. He and his wife, Maritza, were on the way to Texas and they stopped by. While grabbing some lunch at Panera Bread we talked shop about the current state of the internet. It turns out that the folks who are not getting hit by Panda are the same ones relying on high quality content.

So I asked Jeff if he would do a webinar for use walking us through high quality content creation. However, this is not your average webinar. We’ll actually be creating content live. Don’t miss it…

PLR Insider Part 5

On October 19, 2011, in plr, by Paul Evans

Game 1 of the World Series is TONIGHT!

I was super tempted to get tickets for tonight and tomorrow’s games. Steven would have loved to fly up and watch live.

However, when I asked him, “Hey, do you want to miss three days of school and go to St Louis?”

He thought a minute and replied, “I better not. I don’t need to miss that much.”

What?!

What sort of kid makes that sort of decision? School over baseball?  Now before you think he’s a book nerd, know this – he hates school and LOVES sports. Especially the Cardinals!

Steven has never said scholl is awesome. Never said he had a great day. The closest he’s ever come to it is… “It was OK.”

Even at age 15, Steven is accepting present pain for future gain. I know that’s strange for a boy. Heck, it’s strange for adults.

Serious questions:

How many times have you given in to temporary satisfaction in business instead of sacrificing for the long-term goal?

How many times have you chased the latest trend (really a diversion) instead of staying true to the fundamentals that really work?

Think about that this week.

Guest Blogging: Clues to Getting a “Yes”

On October 17, 2011, in blogging, by Paul Evans

Guest Blogging: How to Find Work

Don’t waste time on blogs that are not active. If the last post was written a year ago, and there are exactly two comments for the last six months (both by the owner’s mother) it’s going to be more pain than gain.  Furthermore, it’s a sure sign the owner may just be too busy (or too disorganized) to promote it.

Not only should regular posts be a hallmark of the blog you’re considering, but it should have character and be an entity unto itself.

That’s the easy part.  How do you find out if a blog needs a guest poster for guest blogging?

Guest Blogging Tips

Many will let you know they need guest blogging.

They’ll have a spot in plain sight (often the sidebar) letting you know that guest blogging is welcome and telling you how to apply.

The best ones also will often have a section with clear guidelines about whether or not:

  • Photos are allowed
  • Bylines, resource boxes or bio clips are encouraged
  • Linking is permitted

They will often also state clearly:

  • What topics and types of posts they are looking for
  • What article length is preferred
  • Guidelines for style

But don’t sit there meekly waiting for your favorite blog to follow this formula for guest blogging.  You may have to be assertive and proactive about putting the idea in the owner’s head.  In that case, it’s up to you to point out to the owner that you’re the solution to her problem!

Guest Blogging Clues

Here are your clues that a blog may be ripe for a guest writer.  The blog owner is talking up:

  1. Going on that cruise to Alaska next month
  2. Heading off to an upcoming industry conference
  3. Complaining about being overwhelmed with projects
  4. Talking about their upcoming surgery
  5. Talking about the impending birth of baby number three

In other words, get into the habit of following likely blogs and looking for opportunities – and clues for guest blogging.

PLR Insider Part 3

On October 16, 2011, in plr, by Paul Evans

Part 3: Five Changes (3 of 3)
========================

So far in Part 3 we’ve covered…

01: The Title
02: The Table of Contents
03: Talking Type
04: Text Formatting

Now…

05: Transform Delivery

On average, PLR buyers do little to the content and rarely change the delivery method.

If a person buys an ebook, they usually sell it as an ebook.

If a person buys content as articles, they usually use the articles for blog posts.

If videos are purchased, then videos are released.

Don’t be like them.

Change the delivery format.

Ebooks can be turned into…

  • Articles.
  • Reports.
  • Videos.
  • Audio.
  • An eclass.
  • Newsletters.
  • Blog posts.
  • Tweets.
  • Facebook posts.

Audio can be transcribed and turned into any of the above.

With videos you could…

1. Get it transcribed.
2. Screen capture the main slides.
3. Paste the slides into the transcription.
4. Strip an MP3

Then you would have a complete multimedia product. Which you can sell for more money and hit all the learning styles.

These transformations do not take long. If you have a couple of hours you can easily turn an ebook into and audio. In less than a day you can turn an ebook into a video product.

The more changes you make the less you can be concerned about competition.

(Note to Nicheology members. If you have not watched the PLR conversion training block your calendar… http://www.nicheology.com/members/102.cfm You get to watch over my shoulder as I completely transform a PLR into a totally new product.)

In part 4 we will cover using PLR for blog posts and how to separate yourself from the crowd. Plus how to SEOify it.

PLR Insider Part 3 : Five Changes (2/3)
====================================

Yesterday we covered…

The title and the table of contents.

03 : Talking Type

You want the content to sound like YOU.

As you read through your PLR… yes, you must read, watch or listen to it… make changes to the vocabulary and language so it feels like you.

You have certain phrases and a certain voice that your people recognize. Use the idioms and jargon familiar to you and your audience.

I say things like folks, ain’t, the internets and other southern slang because it’s part of my heritage and personality. You don’t find me using highly professional or technical language. It’s not me. I know the terms and can pontificate in a gregarious fashion, but, really, would that generate the style of amalgamation I’m looking for?

Talking Type in Action:

Original paragraph:

Losing weight can be one of the most difficult things a person has to do. Like smoking, food is sometimes an addiction. There are many reasons why someone may be overweight. In most cases, it is due to lack of exercise and eating the wrong foods. Often, people overeat out of habit. They may pick at food casually all day long or indulge in snacks that they love. In some cases, a woman has just had a child and needs to lose the excess weight that she gained after having the baby. This can be difficult as often a new baby is exhausting and distressing on the body. It can be tough to lose weight after giving birth, especially if you have other children to look out after.

New paragraph:

Losing weight can be one of the most difficult things an artist has to do. Like smoking, food is sometimes an addiction. There are plenty of chubby, starving artists! There are many reasons why people like us gain weight. Most of the time, it’s because our creativity has us thinking more about our process than exercise and nutrition. Often, we overeat while waiting for inspiration to strike. We might may pick at food casually all day long or grab a snack that we love – all unconsciously since we’re focusing on our work. In some cases, a creative who has just “given birth” to their latest piece of art overeats as a reward. It’s great to celebrate accomplishment, but we have to be careful. It’s easy to for an unhealthy pattern to become a habit rather than a momentary treat!

You see, the changes were not massive, but if you bought the book you would know it’s for you as an artist. And doing a slight rewrite is much easier than trying to come up with everything to say from scratch.

04 : Text Formatting

A PDF with unformatted text can come across boring. Just a bit of work adding bold, italics, underlining and bullets can make a big difference – both in readability and perceived value.

Let’s look at our new paragraph formatted differently…

Losing weight can be one of the most difficult things an artist has to do.

Like smoking, food is sometimes an addiction. There are plenty of chubby, starving artists!

There are many reasons why people like us gain weight. Most of the time, it’s because…

1. Our creativity has us thinking more about our process than exercise and nutrition.
2. We overeat while waiting for inspiration to strike.
3. We might may pick at food casually all day long or grab a snack that we love – all unconsciously since we’re focusing on our work.
4. In some cases, a creative who has just “given birth” to their latest piece of art overeats as a reward.

It’s great to celebrate accomplishment, but we have to be careful. It’s easy to for an unhealthy pattern to become a habit rather than a momentary treat!

Isn’t that style a lot better than the thick original paragraph?

OK, tomorrow we’ll hit the last change.

Success is NOT an Accident,
Paul
